Progress® Software: Webspeed®, QAD MFG/Pro®, OpenEdge®

Progress Software Corporation Overview

Headquartered on the outskirts of booming Boston in the town of Bedford, Massachusetts, the Progress Software Corporation began in 1981 as Data Language, a small software company founded by Joseph Alsop, Clyde Kessel, and Charles Ziering.

Progress is best known across the world for QAD MFG/Pro, OpenEdge and 4GL. More than 60,000 businesses in over 140 nations use Progress technology or products, over 89% of which are Fortune 500 companies. Your industry or business is probably associated with Progress; areas such as financial trading, telecommunication, financial services, government, medical, and manufacturing use Progress right now. Xensys has Progress clients in similar industries.

The Progress Software Business

Perhaps best known for application infrastructure software, Progress has earned its name for Progress 4GL, which arose in the 1980s as a Fourth Generation programming language. Technology evolution has seen Moore's Law shattered, with 4GL churning into OpenEdge Advanced Business Language, or OpenEdge ABL. Unique to this application development language is the English syntax used to abridge software development. Progress 4GL, now called OpenEdge ABL, is a class of SpeedScript.

OpenEdge ABL aids development of web or Internet based applications, birthing what is today known as Software as a Service, or SaaS. These applications are made using an incorporated relational database and programming tool, all of which are usable across various computer systems. This eases the end-user experience, which does not need to be aware of the application's architecture.

Application Development Platform Products

4GL

The world is getting smaller and competition heavier. In a marketplace where information is king, the programming language you choose or the developer you hire ultimately dictates your success. Fourth Generation Languages have the advantages of increasing productivity while driving down the cost of application development. The right choice then lies within the right 4GL tool for your business. Progress 4GL allows novel tools that allow the developer to:

Implement many alterations to a variety of programs rapidly with file drag and drop, cut and paste, and search and replace within the Procedure Editor

Make executable code on all applications using the Application Compiler

Find and fix bugs in an application using the Debugger

Manage database definitions and business rules

Make elements to launch within a client-server, n-tier, or Internet application using the Open Client Toolkit

Transfer description data from applications that are not OpenEdge into OpenEdge servers for Microsoft SQL, ODBC, and Oracle

OpenEdge

Fourth Generation Languages power the new OpenEdge. Progress recently launched its OpenEdge 10.1B, a revolutionary dependable and adaptable business application platform allowing you to set your business apart from the crowd. Application platforms such as OpenEdge provide developers and end-users quick launching of a standards-based, service-oriented product with a lower total cost of ownership.

WebSpeed

The glory of WebSpeed is in its name. WebSpeed takes a Progress application and allows it to be used quickly and easily across a web environment or company intranet and extranet. This significantly decreases costs and is accessible to employees in any location. Many Progress applications can be enabled to run on WebSpeed, from orders and data-entry to customer support, RFID and inventory management. QAD MFG/Pro

As an entire family of products, QAD MFG Pro is a solution for both small single-site and multinational corporations. QAD MFG Pro aids in shared services, cross-border trade (import export), multi-site manufacturing, and multi-entity accounting.

The family of QAD MFG Pro applications is founded in a vast depth of knowledge of the manufacturing industry. The goal of QAD MFG Pro is to simplify managing operations, supply chain management, business financials, technology, and corporate performance.

Software as a Service (SaaS): Progress and SaaS a natural fit

Progress software platforms and Progress applications naturally lend themselves to the Software as a Service, or SaaS business model. WebSpeed, for example, is by its very nature a SaaS model. Software as a Service began as the Application Service Provider, or ASP, model, and is now referred to as SaaS, or On-Demand, and used heavily throughout the world. Service Oriented Architecture helps bring to SaaS into being with once intra- and extranet only applications fully migrated onto the Internet.
